The number of Approved Charitable Institutions ("ACI") in Hong Kong rose from about 4,100 (number) in 2005 to nearly 6,000 early 2009 and the number of non-private company limited by gurarantee incorporated annually in Hong Kong is averaged at 700 companies.

Types of establishment

• special purposed Ordinance (like Community Chest of Hong Kong Ordinance etc..)
• organisations / societies registered under the Societies Ordinance;
  advantages: cost is minimal and easy to apply
  disadvantages: member liabilities may be unlimited
• company limited by guarantee registered under the Companies Ordinance
  advantages: member liabilities are stated not exceeding certain amount
  disadvantages: costly and lengthly registration

Source of fund

• private donation or sponsorship;
• members' contribution;
• fees from events or activities;
• grant/subventions/Lotteries Fund from the Government;
• fund-raising activities: flag day under public subscription permit;
• general charitable fund-raising activities under public subscription permit (like: charity sale of badges/tokens..., donation boxes, charity ride, passing of offering bags etc..)
