
NPOs (Non-Profit Organisations) in Hong Kong

The number of Approved Charitable Institutions ("ACI") in Hong Kong rose from about 4,100 (number) in 2005 to nearly 6,000 early 2009 and the number of non-private company limited by gurarantee incorporated annually in Hong Kong is averaged at 700 companies.
Types of establishment
- special purposed Ordinance (like Community Chest of Hong Kong Ordinance etc..)
- organisations / societies registered under the Societies Ordinance;
advantages: cost is minimal and easy to apply
disadvantages: member liabilities may be unlimited
- company limited by guarantee registered under the Companies Ordinance
advantages: member liabilities are stated not exceeding certain amount
disadvantages: costly and lengthly registration
Source of fund
- private donation or sponsorship;
- members' contribution;
- fees from events or activities;
- grant/subventions/Lotteries Fund from the Government;
- fund-raising activities: flag day under public subscription permit;
- general charitable fund-raising activities under public subscription permit (like: charity sale of badges/tokens..., donation boxes, charity ride, passing of offering bags etc..)
